A prolonged crisis in Ukraine began on November 2013, when then-president Viktor Yanukovych suspended preparations for the implementation of an association agreement with the European Union. After months of the protests and murdering of more than 100 people by police in Kiev, president was ousted by the protesters on 22 February 2014. Following its annexation of Crimea, Russia intervened in different ways throughout the war in the Donbass region. According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs the number of documented deaths caused by the war on Donbass was at least 9,167 as of mid-February 2016.
